PLOUGH SUNDAY 2024
Moreton Show’s annual Plough Sunday celebration took place on Sunday 7th January at St. James’ Church Longborough.
This is the 32nd Plough Sunday service organised by Moreton-in-Marsh District Agricultural & Horse Show Society. It is a traditional English celebration of the beginning of the agricultural year, with origins said to date back to medieval times. Today we continue the traditional Victorian service where the parish Ploughs, decorated with ribbons, would be dragged to the church to be blessed.
At our service, a Plough, representing all the farm machinery and tools, and a Milk Churn and Cotswold Sheep, representing the livestock and all the work that is done caring for them, are all brought into the church to be blessed, symbolising the start of another farming year, and giving thanks to all those that work in agriculture.
The shows Honorary chaplain, Reverend David Quin, kindly officiated the service. Reverend David Quin comes from a farming background and has been Moreton Show’s chaplain for the last two years.
Mr Simon Randall CBE, a past president of Moreton Show and Mrs Elizabeth White, Jubilee Challenge Trophy winner of Moreton Shows Home and Garden section, kindly did the readings for the service and Mrs Rose Smith, Chairman of Farms & Crops, and Miss Millie Parkes were our farming representatives.
A collection was taken and we are delighted to be able to donate £336.52 between St. James Church, Longborough and the Focus Cancer Charity at Cheltenham Oncology Centre.
We were delighted to see so many people in the congregation come and join us for this special occasion and our warm thanks are extended to the team at St. James Church for all their help with the service and to Mrs Dawn Minett for the use of her plough and Mr Steve Parkes for bringing his champion Cotswold Ram.
